A Day at the Cleveland Botanical Garden

On Saturday, March 1, 2008, a group of writers from the National Writing Project-Kent State University joined together for a writing marathon at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. It was a splendid environment that inspired some amazing writing. As several writers mentioned, it was the perfect place to find your soul.

Peace

Where did you go?
I let you slip away.
You did not go willingly.
I did not really let you slip - I pushed you away.
I filled each moment with deadlines, projects, and "must-do's".
How sad.
How thoughtless.
I should have surrounded each day and filled them up with you.

I took the photos that accompany this page were taken at the orchid exhibit this weekend. I hope others will post some of their writings and photos here, as well.

Tapestry of Voices

Sunlight and shadows fall
in a sun-warmed room of rock
replicating the Spiny Desert,
while outside winter wind blows
fine puffs of snow and
cars speed by to unknown destinations.

Cool, clear water flows
meandering down a rock covered path
moving faster and faster only
to spill over, crashing together and
then, starting all over again
in the Cloud Room.

Life springs from dormancy:
green leaves burst free from dying limbs,
lacy fern branches catch and cradle
crunchy dead leaves,
tenacious twining roots embrace,
velvet sultry orchids seduce.

And we gather in the library
quiet as church mice –
at first, until one voice sounds
followed by another and another,
rising and falling, weaving together
in a tapestry of strength, courage and hope
that wraps around us,
giving warmth and comfort
as we add a piece of ourselves.
